Congratulations,

You are on your way to becoming a member of…

The PHMS BAND!!

We know that this is a very overwhelming time for all of you, so please do not hesitate to contact us at any point with questions or concerns.

Now what do we do????

  1. Be sure you have tried out everything you want to try and let the directors help you pick the best instrument for you!  (Sometimes facial characteristics can impact success.  For example, full lips work better on larger mouthpieces.  Mrs. Desjardins has a “teardrop” on her top lip which prevents her from playing the full range of the flute.  These are a few things that we look for when we screen your child.)

  1. Once you have chosen an instrument, select “band” as your 1st elective choice on your registration card for 6th grade.  If you choose another elective as your 1st choice, you will not be put into a band class.

  1. Reserve an instrument as soon as possible.  School instruments (oboe, bassoon, French horn, euphonium, and tuba) get an instrument through the school and the usage fee is $100 per school year.  (We rely heavily on our students who play school instruments.  These students should also enroll in personal training sessions once school starts.)  If your child plays a different instrument, you can reserve an instrument through Music and Arts Centers.  While there are other music stores (and you are welcome to rent from them), we HIGHLY recommend Music and Arts Centers.  They have a representative who visits the school once a week to deal with instrument issues so you do not have to!  You should reserve an instrument AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  Instruments can be hard to find and more expensive in July than they are now.  If you are looking to purchase, Music and Arts can help you as well.  If you have an older instrument that has been used before, please have it evaluated BEFORE your child tries to play it.  Oftentimes, they have been neglected and need extensive repair.  (It would be like teaching someone to drive a car with a flat tire.)  Music and Arts Center’s info is listed at the bottom of this page.

  1. You will receive an email from us during the summer with additional information.  Please make sure we have all your most recent contact information and that it is legible.  WE WILL HAVE A BACK TO SCHOOL ORIENTATION MEETING AUSGUST 27, 6-7pm.  You can fill out forms, pay fees and get questions answered before school starts!J

  1. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us!  We are here to make this as easy a transition as possible!
